As a result I thought a step-by-step guide would be a good idea, so here it is!Welcome to the corner of Ultimate Amiga dedicated to running E-UAE, the cross-platform Amiga emulator, on Apple Macintosh OSX. Windows users are spoilt with WinUAE which provides an all-in-one idiot-proof way of configuring and controlling your emulated Amiga, whereas Mac users have to do a bit of work to get things up and running.
Amiga Emulator Code From WinUAE□Now you’ve got all the files, create a folder in your Applications directory and call it Amiga. For this tutorial I’m going to use Fantastic Dizzy. If possible get hold of 1.3, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1 as this will allow emulation of the “standard” range of Amigas.Software is available everywhere visit LemonAmiga and browse the database, and you’ll find most of the games have links to take you to potential download locations. Try both and see which one works better for you!The rights to the Kickstart ROMs are pwned by Cloanto so I can’t legally point you to a download, but Google is your friend. First off you’ll need to download a few things — eUAE (the actual emulator), Hi-Toro (a front-end for eUAE), the Kickstart ROMs, and some software to use on the Amiga.Windows users are spoilt with WinUAE which provides an all-in-one idiot-proof way of configuring and controlling your emulated Amiga, whereas Mac users have to.EUAE comes in a variety of flavours the official version is available here (scroll down for the download link), and an unsupported (but more recent) version is available here. FS-UAE is an Amiga emulator based on the excellent emulation code from WinUAE currently developed and maintained by Toni Wilen. If you have a joystick, select it, otherwise pick an existing keyboard setup or create your own, bearing in mind that joystick port ONE is player 1 and port 0 is player 2… (Also note that the keys you pick won’t work as keyboard keys in the emulator, so pick ones that won’t interfere with any typing you may want to do!)Now click that curious looking button to the right of the Ok button a panel will flip out from the top of the window. Change the centering modes to “Smart”.Now go to the Devices tab to select your controller — from the Joystick port 1 drop-down list select the appropriate method (i.e. I’d also recommend changing “After invoking E-UAE” to “Wait”.Close the preferences panel and click “Display” change Fullscreen and Windowed resolutions to 640×512, turn on OpenGL rendering and Synchronise with display refresh. In the four boxes, select the relevant folders you created above (you can drag them from Finder).Next open Hi-Toro’s preferences panel in the E-UAE box, locate your copy of eUAE, and make sure “Open default configuration” and “Save backups” are ticked. (It’s not compulsory, but it’ll make following this tutorial easier.) Copy the Kickstart ROMs to the ROMs folder, and put Hi-Toro and eUAE in the Amiga folder. We’ll need to tell Hi-Toro where things are, so launch it and click on Paths. You can also add a picture to it if you want by clicking the + button under the crosshairs — this is optional, but it makes everything look a bit nicer. □On the Overview tab enter A500 for the description, and something like Original A500 in Information. □From the configuration menu select Open Default to give yourself a blank slate — picking “New A500” means you’ll need to re-set all the paths and controllers and stuff, so it’s actually more time consuming doing it that way. If you’re new to the Amiga it may be a bit bewildering at first, but at least the emulation hurdle should now be less daunting. Don’t worry, I’ll wait!If you’re feeling adventurous you can grab screenshots of your games and create specific configurations for them to avoid having to pick floppies and what not I usually reserve this for games I play a lot or that have a weird setup, but in the absence of Lemonade on OS X it’s the closest we yet have to a game browser.Other than that, I suggest playing around a bit. The other common machine types are at the end of the tutorial, so head off and sort those out then come back. Check that the Chipset tab is set to OCS PAL, leave the display settings (unless you want it to start in full screen by default or something). Now pick Save As from the File menu, and save it in your Configurations folder as A500. On the CPU tab you may want to turn on Compatible and Cycle exact — it eats a bit more CPU time, but is slightly more reliable for some games (although on the whole it’s not required). If that doesn’t help, try twiddling the amount of RAM you have — remember, older games may crash if there’s too much! Failing that, try a different version of the game or use a WHDLoad version (to be covered in the hard-drive tutorial later). The best way to make a rough guess is to look at the year of release for the game, then choose the Amiga model that was available the year before. Game won’t run: You may need to tweak your configuration. Stuck at some sort of intro while loading the game: Try pressing the mouse buttons (left, right, both), pressing space, escape, etc. If a game asks for another disk, hold F11 and press F1 and a file browser will appear… Roy ayers everybody loves the sunshine mp3 free downloadIt has been very helpful, and was an entertaining read. 8 Responses to “OS X Amiga Emulation Tutorial”Firstly, thanks a lot for that tutorial. If you spot errors or omissions or have anything to add, feel free to shout, and check back for the hard drive tuorial in the near future. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but most games will run under one of these configurations.RAM: 1MB Chip (note you need to set the chipset first!)HDD: We’ll cover this in a later tutorial.CPU: 68020/68881 (UAE’s 020 emulation is faster than the 040/060 emulation), speed MaxLike Loading. If you have a USB controller and find that directions behave oddly, try using something like USB Overdrive or Controllermate to remap them to keyboard keys.I hope this answers most of your questions. Should I override this to 640 X 512? Does it really make much difference? I would rather have a larger screen size if possible.Under the floppies tab, is there any reason not to increase the floppy disk speed? As far as I’m aware, it should speed up loading times.Still under the floppies tab, there’s an an option to create a disk file for saving games. Is that correct?Display resolution: I couldn’t select 640 X 512 as the windowed resolution until after I had switched on OpenGL rendering and synchronise with display refresh, and I still can’t select it for the fullscreen resolution (I do have an 800 X 600 option though). I wound up creating a save bundle in the folder and I could select that. I presumed that disks is for the ADF files and the hard file path should point at the hard disks folder, but I’m still not sure about the save states…Talking of the save states folder, it can’t be selected from the paths tab. The Roms and configurations folders are covered later in the tutorial, but the others aren’t. I still have my original A500 with heaps of games but it doesn’t work properly.Your tutorial was soooo helpful and simple to follow. It’s always been so complicated and I’ve never gotten it to work. I have been trying to get the Amiga 500 to work on my mac or pc on and off again for years. I look forward to the hard disk follow up.Thank you so much for this tutorial. Once again – thanks for doing this, it’s been very helpful. I followed the instructions and everything works just fine. All the best.I feel I must write to say how grateful I am for this tutorial! As someone who loved his A600 as boy and isn’t very computer savvy this article was very useful. It’s really a shame that as an adult its much more difficult to be entertained compared to when you were a kid. (or week) Just thinking about these games brings back so many happy memories.
